Having problems viewing the OnDemand eLearning Lectures?
There are several technical reasons you may not be able to view these streaming one hour videos. The following article describes the most common causes and solutions to overcome this problem.
BEFORE YOU GET STARTED. You will need the cooperation of your Information Technology (IT) department to implement most of these solutions. Their work involves making changes to your company's firewall settings and settings changes within Microsoft's Windows Media Player.
But first a test. Before you begin making system changes, let's make sure the problem is with the streaming video feed to your system. The following two URL addresses directly access test videos that bypass all Bentley LEARN Server access control and monitoring operations:
The first one (9.8MB) is a short cartoon-like animation created with MicroStation:
mms://institute-stream.bentley.com/institute/test/lightdesignshort5.wmv
The second test is a shorter (361KB) video more typical of what you would expect in an onDemand eLearning Lecture:
mms://institute-stream.bentley.com/institute/test/light_design_short.wmv
In both instances you will have to copy and paste the link directly into an open Internet Explorer browser. If all goes well you will view the animation and lecture in your Windows Media Player (version 9 or better is recommended). If, on the other hand, you get no activity, a login screen or some other failure to play the videos then the issue is definitely associated with either your company's firewall or your Windows Media Player settings.
First, the firewall. Bentley Systems' Microsoft Streaming Video server uses the MMS TCP protocol for optimum utilization of network bandwidth, an important consideration for everyone involved. This is not yet a commonly known protocol like HTTP so it is very likely your company's firewall is blocking one or more of the TCP ports normally assigned to this service. The port numbers involved are 80, 554 and 1755 with the last one being the most important. These are standard ports Microsoft specifies in their streaming video server technology. Work with your IT department to have this port opened for the server institute-stream.bentley.com, the source of all of our streaming video. For additional technical information direct from Microsoft, visit this web page located on Microsoft's web site:
Firewall Information for Windows Media Services... (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/serve/firewall.aspx)
Once you have this port opened, try the sample videos again. If, you still cannot play the videos then it is most likely a specific setting in your Windows Media Player. Although Windows Media Player can support video feeds using other protocols such as HTTP, the Bentley Video Server only serves out the MMS protocol. In Windows Media Player open with the "classic" window frame active, perform the following steps:
- Open the Options dialog box (Tools menu > Options...)
- Click the Network tab.
- Turn on the Multicast and TCP options. You can leave the other options on as well but the two mentioned are the important ones.
- Click OK to accept the changes.
Can't find the Network tab in your Options dialog box? Chances are you do not have administrative privileges to your system or your IT department has put in a policy to disable this feature. In either case, work with them to access this most important configuration setup.
If you are successful in setting the options above, try the test videos again. In most cases, you should now be able to view the videos without further problems. You can now return to the Bentley LEARN Server and resume your onDemand eLearning Lecture experience.
Should you still have issues with this you will need to work with your IT department to possibly configure the MMS proxy settings (part of the Options dialog box) and further test this process.
Issue with Missing Windows Media Player Codecs
When you attempt to run an onDemand eLearning Lecture you receive one of the following error messages:
Cannot play back the video stream: no suitable decompressor could be found.
Unable to download an appropriate decompressor.
Starting with version 9, Windows Media Player automatically downloads missing codecs (compressor/decompressor) whenever possible. However, it does not handle codecs associated with Windows Media Player older than version 9 or non-standard codecs provided by third party software developers. When it cannot resolve the download, you receive one of the error messages shown above. To resolve the problem, you must manually download and install the missing codec or codecs. An overview of this problem can be found at this link:
To directly download the missing Version 7 codecs click the following Microsoft link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/format/codecdownload.aspx
NOTE: The abovementioned link is provided by Microsoft for company IT professionals so you may need to consult with your IT department before proceeding with this installation.
In addition to the missing Version 7 codecs, there is one more audio-only codec no longer supported by Microsoft but is still in used in many videos. To download the installer for the acelp codec, click the following link:
ftp://ftp2.bentley.com/dist/collateral/institute/selfstudy/acelp_net.exe
Download and install this codec.
